University of South Wales Women’s 1st head coach Kath Morgan was generally pleased with her team’s performance following a 4-0 thrashing of Solent Women’s 1st at the USW Sports Park.
Despite the lopsided score line, Morgan was reserved in her assessment of the game. She noted the short time she has had to influence the style of play of her team, relenting that “the girls are trying to get to understand my standards”.
After a 6-2 win over Bournemouth 1st last week, it was no surprise that USW created a plethora of opportunities once again to run away with the game. However, Morgan still believed that the home side could have been more clinical, saying that “although we didn’t convert them all, it’s a sign of a good team”.
Goals from Ffion Llewellyn, Rhianne Oakley, Annabel Davies and Lucia Carpanini ensured that USW took home all three points for their first home win of the season.
Morgan attributed their unity as a driving factor behind their spirited team performance, “I’m trying to make them work for each other and realise that not everyone can just have a good five minutes”.
Morgan gave an honest critique of USW’s play in midfield, conceding that “we’re taking too many touches, definitely, in the centre of field and turning into players when we need to lift our heads”.
USW have shown their offensive firepower so far this season, tallying 11 goals in their opening three games. Despite this, Morgan gave a comical call for improvement in front of goal. Looking ahead to their next game away to Cardiff Met 2nds, she chuckled that “I think we’ll do a little bit of finishing work on Monday night!”
